Eugene Traynor writes: I have read most of Alice Taylors books and read of the
sculpture of the blacksmith in Innishannon in her book "The Parish".
She was so excited in her writing about this that on my next visit to the south
I went to Innishannon to see this for myself. I didn't even get out of the car I
was so disappointed. Why ? The anvil is the wrong way around for a righthanded
man.We can see he was righthanded because he has the hammer in his right hand,
therefore the point of the anvil should point to his left. Shirley Walsh replies: I double checked with my friend Matthew who is a Blacksmith and he said this: 'The anvil is typically horn to your hand as in this image; also the anvil is the ultimate tool in that all parts and positions are functional. One might even flip an anvil on its side to use the feet crossways'. So the statue is a perfect portrayal and best left alone. If anyone can give us the answer please e-mail info@innishannon.net

might be able to help me concerning the site of the old Hodder house called
Coolmorein (circa 1680-1690). It was on the banks of the Bandon river, below
Innishannon. I am a Failte Ireland National Tour Guide and I am required, as we drive along
the roads of Ireland, to point-out all the different cities, towns and
villages that we pass through. When pointing-out the locations we are
also required to give the Irish name for that location, and also the meaning
of the Irish name. I have a problem with the name for Innishannon and mabey you
might be able to help me. The name of the village is Innishannon. The
guide books that I have consulted give the Irish for this as 'Inis Eonain'.
My knowledge of the Irish language is as follows: Inis means a field or
meadow. So Innishannon should translate as Eonain's field or
meadow. Where did the 'hannon' part of the word come from, what does it
mean, and what is its significance in the name of the village. I would greatly
appreciate any help that you could give me in this matter - if you can help

Hello, I will be visiting Ireland in May. My great grandfather was born in Innishannon. Could you give me any leads on local information such as birth records, baptism,marriage, etc. I am sure he was Roman Catholic. His name was Daniel Joseph Mulcahy and he was born about 1859.
